Our Grants
Our Chances for Children grants are targeted at those living in financial hardship, and dealing with multiple challenging social issues.
They are made directly to children and young people who are facing a range of complex issues. They are tailored to their particular needs, in order to prevent them from falling further into crisis and help them to transform their lives. The grants pay for a range of items and costs, many of which are those we would expect any child growing up in the UK to have, but which their parents or carers cannot afford. In a small number of cases, where home is not the best place for a child to be, the grant pays for them to attend boarding school.
What makes our Chances for Children grants different is that they offer a holistic funding package designed to meet the multiple needs of vulnerable children and young people. The grants meet immediate practical needs by paying for household items, but also meet a child’s longer-term educational and emotional needs. As such, we have found that they can have a disproportionately positive impact compared to their monetary value; in some cases, they are transformational. There is nothing else like them available within the social care sector.
The diagram below describes the change that we aim to make with each grant.
We receive grant applications via a network of referral organisations such as local charities, social services and health centres. These organisations ensure that we are getting the funds to those that need them most and through them we can ensure appropriate due diligence on use of the grants.

Our Impact
We are committed to understanding the impacts of our grants, which we measure against our Theory of Change. This underpins all of our work at Buttle UK and helps us to make sure that our grants are as holistic as possible. Our measures of impact capture this through direct feedback from parents, carers, frontline workers, and children and young people.

Research Reports
As our organisation and grant-making grows, our ambitions for research have grown too. We are committed to conducting rigorous research across the many areas our work touches, drawing on our understanding of the challenges that children and young people face. We use this research to draw attention to serious issues and gaps in support, something that we are focusing on across our 2025-30 strategy.
