Gift summer smiles & fresh starts: Why our summer appeal for children in poverty is needed now more than ever before
For many children growing up in poverty in the UK, the summer holidays are not a time of freedom and fun,but of shame, stress, and isolation.
At Buttle UK, we work with children and young people who are already facing extreme hardship due to poverty, homelessness, domestic abuse, or family breakdown. While most children are looking forward to days out, sleepovers, and new school supplies, the children we support often feel left out and anxious. They can’t afford to join in with their peers,or even invite a friend over to play.
The Hidden Cost of Summer Holidays
Over 4.5 million children in the UK are currently living in poverty. For many of them, summer means long days in temporary accommodation with no toys, no outings, and no social interaction. The emotional impact is huge. Children tell us they feel embarrassed and excluded, feelings that can damage confidence and mental wellbeing.
As the new school year approaches, this shame often deepens. Without the right school uniform, basic supplies, or a decent night’s sleep, these children are at a disadvantage from day one.
Why Back-to-School Support Matters
Our Chances for Children grants are designed to give children the tools they need to thrive, not just academically, but emotionally and socially.
When children have what they need, they feel more confident. They’re more likely to attend school regularly, make friends, and believe in their own future.
Real impact, thanks to you
Thanks to generous donations, we’ve supported thousands of families like Sarah’s, who fled domestic abuse with her three children. After months of upheaval, Buttle UK was able to provide uniforms, tutoring, and funding for after-school clubs, helping them to settle into a new school, build friendships, and regain their self-esteem.
One mum had this to say “My kids are absolutely thrilled since we got the grant. They now have a bed to sleep in, a laptop for their schoolwork, uniforms, shoes, and clothes. All these things have brought them so much joy, especially after we moved to temporary housing with nothing”
