Supporting Women & Girls: A Snapshot of Buttle UK’s Impact in 2024

At Buttle UK, we are committed to supporting families facing crisis. Families we support are often those led by women, bearing the brunt of hardship and adversity. As we mark International Women’s Day, we reflect on the impact we’ve had in 2024 in supporting women and girls, ensuring they have access to the essential items and support they need to rebuild their lives and thrive.

Key Stats for 2024

In 2024, Buttle UK’s grants reached 5,305 women and girls. This included:

  • 3,073 girls (children and young people)
  • 2,232 women (parents and carers)

We provided a total of £4,119,441 in grants to households led by women, with significant contributions in key areas:

  • £1,050,225 for wellbeing items
  • £1,376,219 for educational support
  • £1,547,942 for home essentials

To single-parent households led by women, we distributed:

  • 3534 items of furniture
  • 2605 laptops and tablets
  • 2379 toys, books, and games
  • 2194 social activities and days out
  • 2026 items of children’s clothing and footwear

These figures highlight the vast reach and support provided to families that need it most. Women leading these households, often navigating multiple challenges, benefit significantly from these donations.

The Women We Support

It’s no secret that women, especially single mothers, face some of the toughest challenges. In 2024, 87% of all applications for grants came from families headed by women, with 85% of those applications submitted by single parents or carers. Many of these women are survivors of domestic violence, family breakdowns, and other trauma, often forced to leave behind their homes and belongings.

These women and their children often live in temporary housing, such as refuges or hotels, facing the reality of having to start over in a new location without the support systems they need. This uncertainty creates emotional and mental health challenges for their children, and difficulty attending school. The women we support are not only dealing with the trauma of their past but are also navigating the complexities of being primary caregivers under extremely difficult circumstances.

However, these women are also incredibly resilient, showing immense strength as they care for their children and work towards rebuilding their lives. At Buttle UK, we are proud to be able to support these women and their families in overcoming these challenges.

The Women’s Giving Circle: A Powerful Support Network

Our Women’s Giving Circle is one example of how we raise both funds and awareness for these vital causes. This initiative brings together committed individuals, particularly women, to raise funds that will directly support more children and young women in need. By working together, members of the circle amplify the impact of their individual contributions, creating a powerful collective force for change. The funds raised through this initiative help provide essential items, such as educational support, home goods, and items that promote the wellbeing of both mothers and children.

Why Our Work is Crucial

While we are a charity that supports all children and young people, it is clear that our work disproportionately impacts women-led households. These households are often the ones most affected by family breakdown and the aftermath of trauma. Through our grants, we are not only providing material support but offering hope and respite during a difficult time.

As we reflect on our impact in 2024, we celebrate the incredible resilience of the women we support. Every day, we are inspired by their courage and strength. But on International Women’s Day, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the amazing work they do and our role in supporting them as they rebuild their lives.

We are proud to stand with women, and we remain committed to ensuring that our grants continue to make a difference for those who need it the most. We applaud the incredible resilience of these women, today and every day.
